Student responses

Several weeks ago, after a lesson on God’s words being true, 5 students responded to the promptings of the Holy Spirit! One student gave his life to Christ, one expressed a desire to draw closer to Christ, and 3 expressed their desire to pursue Christ on a more consistent basis! God is at work in the lives of high school students at Ignite!

Honoring commitments

At Ignite! we were in a series called “Good Sex” designed to teach students Biblical principles for sexual purity. As we neared the end of the series students spent time establishing clear boundaries for their dating relationships, as well as for what they put before their eyes, and even what thoughts they would entertain. We try to do this discipline at Ignite! every two years. In my small group two students who were present the last time we established boundaries shared with me that they have remained faithful to the boundaries they set 2 years ago! They were pleased with their decision to pursue sexual purity and expressed absolutely no regrets!

Vulnerability!

Picture a group of 10 high school guys with 3 adult leaders sitting comfortably in couches and chairs arranged in a circle so everyone can easily see everyone else. Picture these guys talking openly about the boundaries they have set up in their lives. These boundaries are for how far they will go with their respective girlfriends, what they will allow themselves to look at, and even what thoughts they will entertain in their minds. A bunch of high school guys verbalizing God honoring boundaries in their lives! This a pretty typical small group discussion at Ignite! Praise God!

A student comes to Christ!

At our Winter Retreat this year we had a great time together and were challenged to Watch ourselves and our friends, Arm ourselves with the full armor of God, and Respond to God’s call on our lives. Over the weekend one of our students who is relatively new to our ministry prayed to receive Christ into her life! What a joy to see a young person surrender her life over to Christ!

Teen guys studying Scripture together!

I just found out that 5 guys from Ignite! who go to Glenbard West and Wheaton North are meeting on Sunday afternoons to study the book of Hebrews together! They didn’t start this Bible study to gain recognition or notoriety, they did it only because they share a friendship and a mutual desire to study the Word of God together. This is so encouraging to me as one of the characteristics we strive for in Parkview’s student ministries are students who have a love for God’s Word! Life change happens when we allow God to speak to us through His Word!

Connecting leaves with Scripture

Once a month the high school ministry of Parkview serves our community in various tangible ways. Last month we raked leaves of people who would have a difficult time doing that themselves. As we were finishing one house, a student who lived in the neighborhood asked if we could rake the yard of an elderly widow down the street. As the woman who lived there came out of her house wondering why about 10 teenagers were raking her leaves, we were able to tell her about the love of Jesus Christ and that He was the reason we were there that morning! Praise God for students like this who take the command to “Love your neighbor” seriously!

Missions application

Wanted to share what one girl shared on her application for this summer’s missions trip to Germany: “Jesus Christ is my personal Savior and Lord, and the love of my life. He means so much to me, and I want to follow Him and I strive to follow Him…He has changed the way I view my peers, my faith, and myself. I feel that I can talk to God about anything, and love to spend time in His word. There are definitely ways I can grow in Him, but I strive to keep God #1 in my life.” This is pretty typical of so many students who are going on next summer’s missions trip! So exciting!

Living out her faith!

A student named Haley recently had an idea about how she could reach out to the underprivileged. She acted on that idea and gathered 7 other students and an adult leader to help her. After church a couple of Sundays ago they went to her house and put together 40 sack lunches complete with a deli meat sandwich, an apple, a snack and a juice box. After putting the lunches together in brown lunch bags, they loaded the lunches into their backpacks, boarded the train for Chicago and proceeded to hand out the lunches to folks who were living on the streets! They came back with great stories, empty backpacks and hearts that were full! The name of her idea? Brown bags for the homeless!

Teens praying for parents!

After a recent lesson on relating with parents, I gave our students several ideas how they could take steps to better honor and obey their mom and dad. One idea was to pray for them every day the following week. I spoke with one parent who was a little nervous when her son asked to speak to her only to be pleasantly surprised when he asked her how he could pray for her! Good things happen when teens are praying for their parents!

A Student’s Answered Prayer!

– I’ll post this one in the words of one of our students: “I have a praise that I couldn’t wait to share! I brought my friend to youth group on Thursday and she turned to me right after Glenn was done talking and said she loved it. I talked to her about it and she said she really liked it, but she didn’t know if she would come back because she hardly knew anyone. But today she texted me asking if she could come again this week if her parents will let her go out. I’m soo happy! I’ve been praying for her for a couple months now so this is soo cool for me! Praise God that He softened her heart to at least put the desire to come back and try it again!”
